Troutbeck, a member of Design Hotels, is a historic estate turned hotel in Amenia, NY. Troutbeck was central to the social movements of the 19th and 20th centuries under the ownership of first the Benton and then the Spingarn families. Myron Benton, a transcendentalist, poet and gentleman farmer, counted John Burroughs, Emerson and Thoreau amongst his closest friends. Later, Col. Joel Spingarn and Amy Einstein Spingarn were key figures in the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights and the Suffragette movements. Teddy Roosevelt, Louis Mumford, W.E.B Du Bois, Langston Hughes and Justice Thurgood Marshall frequented Troutbeck which twice held critical meetings of the N.A.A.C.P known today as the Amenia Conferences. Col. Spingarn died as Chairman of the organization.
Today Troutbeck is again a vibrant cultural enclave renewed under the design leadership of Champalimaud Design and operated as an award winning and acclaimed independent hotel.
Phase 2, currently in planning, will include an expansion of the hotel with additional keys, several cottages, a second restaurant, an event center and expansion of recreational amenities for the use of both residents and hotel guests, with the goal of Troutbeck becoming a best-in-class, conservation-focused hospitality property.
TWG is also working with the Troutbeck ownership group to develop Belden House, a new hospitality facility in Litchfield, CT
