Painted Canyon

Painted Canyon is a striking unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in Medora, North Dakota. Located off Interstate 94, the site offers breathtaking views of the North Dakota badlands but is currently limited by an outdated visitor center and an overlook that fails to fully enhance the visitor experience. Additionally, its roadside location primarily attracts trucks and rest-stop traffic, rather than park visitors.

Through the National Park Foundation, TWG collaborated with the National Park Service to reimagine Painted Canyon as an engaging, self-guided gateway that immerses visitors in the park’s unique landscape while inspiring deeper exploration of the park and Medora’s tourism opportunities.

TWG led the development of a Priority Area Plan, establishing a strategic vision to transform Painted Canyon into a premier entry point for the park and the region. This effort included initial budgeting, stakeholder coordination, and setting funding targets in collaboration with partners such as the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and the State of North Dakota.
